    In the wild they are not contained in a small area, so they can run away from each other. In a tank, there's nowhere to go, so they will pester each other to death.

    Yes, you should definitely separate them. Males and females do NOT get along, even when breeding it often ends with casualties. The stress will more than likely cause illness or death. You should get a divider or another tank for one of them.

    No, that sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. One of them would bully the other to death most likely. And puffers love nipping fins.
