beta lover

I have just started this and have no idea what to do. I have a 5 gallon tank my sister gave me for a beta I named (you'll never guess)....beta. He seems to like it. The tank has only colored rocks, a plant (dont know the name), a cave, an air pump/filter, a heater tube I dont know how to use, and a lighted hood. My problem is that I just noticed the plant I put in about 2 weeks ago, which Beta seems to love and sleeps on the leaves, is getting transparent and a maybe a little brown. I dont think this is a good thing. Any ideas what I can do? I havent a clue and have done nothing so far. I dont know how to do tests or what to get or what they cost. Help! I dont want my baby to get sick! I love this little guy.
