New 55 gallon tank

I know i posted about the new tank already but figured I would post it in here. There was four fish in there but one didn't make it after the first day of being in there. The other three are a yellow lab, a rusty cichlid and an electric blue. I have a Kenyi (which is possibly holding) and a Socolofi which are both 4 inches that are waiting in a 20 gallon tank until the 55 is ready.

The yellow lab bit the rusty as soon as he was in the tank and that turned into a long liplock match and now the lab is afraid and won't stand up to the rusty. A little vid from one of there many fights that day.

Beautiful tank! I just love the decoration and aquascape! Personally I'd probably go with a black background, it'll really enhance the fishies colours and make the skull stand out.

Congrats on the tank!

Well today I put the Socolofi with the healing fins in the 55 gallon tank. So far after about two hours everything seems to be ok. The other fish are dwarfed by the Socolofi but they aren't afraid of him and swim around with no worries. He swam around the tank a few times when I first put him in but now he likes to hang out in the skull that was in the 30 gallon tank.

This picture looks like the poor electric blue was about to be dinner but he didn't bother him.

I just tested the ammonia and it seems to have read lower than yesterday. The 6 test dip strips read as being in the required safe areas. I'm relieved to see the Socolofi isn't terrorizing the tank. He isn't hardly picked on any of them yet, he and the rusty swim around looking for food like father and son. Hopefully when the Kenyi goes in there is still peace, that's what I'm worried about. Thanks again for your input and advice, you can bill me at the end of the year lol.

lol...
I would get an API kit to test the water, the test strips will say "safe" level and still have ammonia and any reading of ammonia/nitrites can be dangerous.

Im sure with the size of the tank and other fish to pick on it will be okay with the kenyi.

I picked up an api master test kit today. The pH read somewhere between 8.2-8.4..it was a color that's not on the chart. The ammonia ( if I did it right, 8 drops each from 2 different bottle) was 0. nitrite was 0. nitrate was 0.

NitrAte shouldn't be zero. Did you bang the #2 bottle around and shake the heck out of it before you added to test tube?

I shook the #2 bottle before using it . I thought the nitrate should read zero? It was yellow in color.

it should read less than 20 in a f w tank. there should be some level of nitrates in a tank that is cycled. I keep mine at 5-10.

I'm not really sure what the nitrate reading was exactly because it was a yellow color and on the chart yellow is zero then it shows orange as being 5.0.

That's a big gap between zero and 5.0 isn't it?
