My Craigslist Baby Up & Cycling

Well, I got my (completely from Craigslist) 10 gallon up & cycling the other day. It had a huge algae bloom overnight the 1st night it was set up and had a terrible odor. It's all better now though, still some cloudiness, but the green is almost gone and the odor is almost gone as well, thanks to some water changes.

(Almost) Everything in the tank is completely from Craigslist, all for $35. That includes the filter, tank, heater, air pump, used filter media (yeah that part was great), decor, a lot of chemicals, and a whole bunch of other stuff. I'm super happy. I'm working on a background for it right now. I haven't aquascaped it yet since I have the filter media in it.

(MTS has begun. This is my second one.)

The tank is in really great condition it looks brand new what a deal you got. What kind of fish are you going to put in it when it is ready. Oh nothing like a new aquarium....

It could almost be considered brand new, but there are a few hard water stains and some chipped glass in the corners, but other than that, it's spotless

As far as the fish go, I have no idea. I want to do a community tank but not exactly sure what to put in it. I started another thread about what to stock it with but I haven't checked it in a while. I guess I should right now.

I made a background for it lastnight. I basically did a quick Google search for some rocks, blew 'em up into a background, and manipulated it a bit. I then printed it off and completely lined it in clear packaging tape to make it water-resistant.

I think the background makes it "stand out" a bit more...idk Either way it should look great with the decor I plan on putting in there once it has finished cycling.

Fabulous looking!!! You sealed it (inside the tank?) so that water can't get in between?

No the background is on the outside of the tank. What I did was I completely "laminated" it with clear packaging tape to keep it water-proof.

Thanks everyone!

Tested it today.

ammonia: 1-3ppm
Nitrates: off the chart
Nitrites: 0 or off the chart (couldn't tell...)
alkalinity: off the chart (hard to tell...)
Hardness: 25
pH: off the chart

so yeah..a ways to go but oh well, it'll be great once it's done

Well, tested today and my ammonia levels were at 0 and my nitrites were at 0. Looks like it is ready! I'll test it one more time at the end of the day and if it is the same then I'll go ahead and add in my froggies.

Is that all you will be adding or do you have ideas for future fish?

It's going to be a frog species tank. The reason why is because the frogs usually have a difficult time getting to their food before the fish, so yeah. I've had an ADF in a temporary, non-heated, home for a while because my betta & cories kept stealing his food. I'm excited to be able to finally put him in his new home and get him some buddies.

That cycled quick! Must be the used media. What sized paper did you use for the background? I would do that but I would have to tape pieces of paper together and will look bad. Your look like it's been bought.

Nope I just used standard size printer paper. I taped it together with good 'ol scotch tape (but only on the back, not the front!). I then "laminated" it with packaging tape and taped it to the back of the tank. It's pretty easy to do.

Anyway, I was able to decorate it and get my frog in there today. Here are some pictures. I'll be getting him some mates pretty soon, but first they will be quarantined of course.

I realize the tank is a little cloudy. I had vacuumed the gravel just before I took the photos so it hadn't settled yet (had to take photos now, little impatient lol)

Enjoy.

Looks great sglider. Did you seed the filter and tank to get it to cycle so quickly? I didn't see a reading for nitrates listed. Have fun with the new tank!

You have a nice frogs! I didn't look like your tape two different pieces of tape together. I'm going to try it when I have free time.

Thanks everyone!

@aquarist48- No I didn't seed it. It probably cycled due to the amount of filter cartridges I had in there- I think around 5 or so.
