| UPDATED! new pics...almost done cycling!! Hi there at long last here are a few pics of the tank. I am cycling as we speak. The wait is close to over and then I can get some life going on in there! I will also be adding more plants after a bit more research...most likely some dwarf grass in the front and some val in the back. Thanks for looking and comments and suggestions are VERY appreciated! Last edited by Nate McFin; October 12th, 2009 at 08:30 PM.

| that looks very nice. are those rocks just stacked or are they stuck together somehow? if not just to be safe, i would use silicone and stick them together, so they don't fall on any of your fish! |

It was a fun project and I may add to them for a little more height before I set up fish in there. |

| The fish I am looking at for the tank are 3-4 otos and the rest will be tetras only. Most likely 6-8 Cardinal. I was told I could do a Gourami as a centerpiece but I really want to keep the peace and not push my luck. I know the fish I have chosen are not the hardiest of the bunch but I just love the look of plants and Cardinals. I was torn between otos and Corys but Cories wouldn't like my substrate and shale formations. Not to mention otos will love the diatoms I have been creating for the last month. I have a glass I put in with the tank while it has been cycling to start a farm for them! |

| What kind of rocks are they? I really like them. If you really want a gourami your best bet would be a honey gourami, they stay really small, (2-3 in) and aren't aggressive. |

| The rock is "rainbow shale" I picked up a box (way too much for my aquarium) for $30 at the LFS. Having said that I have since learned local landscape companies sell the stuff MUCH cheaper. Take white vinegar with you to test it. Pour some vinegar (or other acid) onto the rock. If it bubbles you shouldn't use it as it will change the pH of your water. I have been keeping a close eye on my pH and have not noticed any changes at all. There are alot of threads on the forum if you search for shale. Where would I be without this place!!!

| Cool, thanks for the info. It's got a really natural look, but it's different from plants and driftwood and stuff. I like it! |

| Well finally got fish today! Cardinal Tetras were the first addition with Otos and maybe a dwarf Gourami coming. I have also added a Cryptocoryne Lutea, Java Moss, Giant Baby Tears (Hemianthus Umbrosum), and the other large sword broke off at the rhyzome. I planted it and it is growing well. The other large sword has given me 4 other baby plants. i am afraid it is really taking over my tank. LOL
Here is an updated pic with the new plants and fish and freshley redecorated.. The green on the rock in front is rubber bands holding the Java Moss to the rocks. I hope to cover the majority of the rock in the tank with it.
one of the baby tears and new residents. Last edited by Nate McFin; March 22nd, 2009 at 12:38 AM.

| Yey, new fish! Cardinals are so pretty. I hear they can be pretty sensitive so keep a good eye on your parameters. |

| Thanks! It has been a real learning experience to say the least. The fish and plants will have a new home soon in a 55 gallon. This one will be for QT for plants as well as fish. Once I get going on the set up I will start a thread for it.
Thanks again for looking! |
