My Early Christmas Gift

Newbie to this forum

This is my 110 gallon Miracle tank I got from Big Al's in October. I couldn't wait until Christmas so I kicked and screamed until I got my own way...lol! I had a 55 gallon previously for approx. 2 years but it started leaking. When I got the new tank filled I put the sponge filter from my old tank and two pairs of pantyhose filled with the substrate from the old tank also to help with cycling. (Someone told me to use pantyhose because I was using solid black gravel in my new tank and had natural gravel in 55). Plus I used almost all the water from the old tank as I did daily water changes. It was surprising how quickly the tank cycled!! Anyways enough babbling here it is and everyone seems very happy!

It is a figure 8 puffer. I have been doing a lot of reading on puffers since I got him a week ago. Usually I do this before I buy a fish I'm interested in but the owner of the LFS whom I exclusively buy from and trust his opinion and suggestions told me he would do great in my tank. He is was right..the puffer is doing great in my tank so far, just loves to explore and zooms all over the whole entire tank..not afraid of nothing! My other fish were curious at first but now don't even bother with him. BUT...this whole controversy on whether they should be in freshwater or brackish water concerns me. I was assured that he was definitely freshwater when I bought him. Anyways let me know your thoughts on that.

They will live longer and be healthier in brackish water of 1.005-1.008. Here's an article I wrote about them: http://www.fishlore.com/aquariummaga...gurepuffer.htm
And this:
General Guide to Puffer Care
Those links should both help you. Please feel free to ask any questions, puffers are my passion.

I have a 20 Gallon tank I was going to set up as a quarantine/hospital tank but maybe I'll make it a brackish tank.
A few days ago I bought some small snails for the puffer and I also bought larger ones for algae. This morning I noticed the puffer going after a big snail who looks like might be dead now. Question..will the puffer keep eating at the snail or should I take the snail out soon?

That would make a wonderful tank for your puffer.
Puffers love their snails, if he isn't dead already, he will be soon. It depends, you could leave it in for about a day, and then remove it. But I wouldn't leave it in much longer, if you're sure it's dead.

I love all the vines in each corner of the tank. They really look great and I love the castle. You have done a fantastic job with your tank set up.

Thanks Jess and Capekate for your compliments. I just totally finished the tank so it's nice to get some positive feedback! There are still things I would like to move around and change but I'll wait until next water change...canopy is a pain to take on and off all the time and I can't reach the bottom of the tank with it on..unless I climb right inside..only pain with tall tanks..lol!

Pinkfloyd I have to say this little puffer is really tugging at the heart strings. I never dreamed it would have such personality...and cute! Thanks for all the information!!

Wow! Looks really good! Are those all artificial plants?

How are the fish doing aggression wise? I'd imagine there'd be a bit with all of the different types of cichlids..

Thanks Fish Addict! Yes those are all artificial plants, I tried real ones quite a few times before and never had any luck. Usually the fish ate most of them and it polluted the tank..lol!

Actually no there isn't any aggression at all...especially now since I brought back the black belt cichlids. Actually I shouldn't say at all... my parrots killed two plecos that they are suppose to be compatible with. Most of the fish in the tank have been together since juvi's so their use to each other.

You're welcome! And I'm glad aggression isn't a problem!

Wish you the best of luck!
