Chronicling the Set Up of my 29g

In the process of setting up a 29g tank. Currently I have the tank and stand, filter, hood, some rocks and a few plants. Still need to get a lot more plants, gravel, better testing kits, and other miscellaneous supplies before I can put the fish in. My plan is to buy a few new items with every paycheck until I have the tank ready and cycled to support fish.

Here are some pics to far:

And because I don't want Hughie to feel bad I might as well throw this in here even though it has nothing to do with the 29g:

When I make another update to the tank I will post a new picture with some more information.

That's a nice 29g set up.
What are you gonna put in it? Or is that a whole other post?

Well right now I have a cory cat and a scissortail in a 2.5g minibow (don't flame, I know they shouldn't be in it!) but when I had the mass fish death I threw everything out and moved the two lone survivors into the already cycled 2.5g to await a new set up (and bought another 2.5g minibow to move my betta to. I divided the old water in half and added new water and fiddled around with the filters and cartridges to cycle them).

The death of the previous tank is a long story, but to make it short my 20g sprung a leak in the middle of the night. When we woke up the following morning there was about 2 inches of water left and 8 dead fish. The hard wood floors were destroyed as well. So I'm going to move Fred & Ethel into the 29g once it is set up.

I'm considering 3 cory cats, 3 scissortails, and 2 angelfish. But since that will be about 35 inches in a 29g I would have to do water changes once to twice a week... so I may just do 3 cory cats and a school of about 4 scissortails which would bring it to almost exactly 29 inches. Or 2 cory cats and 5 scissortails....

If you have any other suggestions that would be great... but they need to be able to incorporate Fred and Ethel.

I am pretty sure that both cories and scissortails are schoolers... how about 6 scissortails and 5 corydoras... that would be a fully stocked tank, but both would be able to school...

6 scissortails alone is 30 inches... add 5 corydoras at 2.5 inches a piece and I'm up at 42.5 inches in a 29g... that might be pushing it....

When I originally got my 20g the store lied to me and said to get 2 of each fish... so I had 2 scissortails, 2 cory cats, 2 gouramis, 2 platys, and 2 rosy barbs. After that I learned that scissortails and cory cats schooled, and 1 gourami would probably have been better... so as upsetting as the leak was it was probably a good thing. I can get it right this time.

The scissortail link on fishlore says up to 5 inches... I wonder which is correct? Anyone know?

This would be so much easier if I wasn't properly informed! I have awhile to make a definite decision though... as you can see the tank is still missing gravel and water...

Hi Cognizant
Its always so much fun to set up a new tank and plan on what kinds of fish to put in it. Good luck with that.
I was wondering tho, after looking at your photos, just what kind of rocks are those? They look like rocks that have been painted silver?
I love your planted driftwood piece, its very nice!

They are called "Zebra Rocks" Anyway that was the name they had them listed as. I actually threw one on the ground a few times to see if I could break it and it is not painted. The color bands actually go through the entire rock like that. I bought them at a place called FishTails.

I will go get a really close shot of it to show you and post it in a few minutes.

I have added a blue background to the tank, but I think it will most likely be changed to black at some point in the future so that the filter and heater will be able to blend in with it better.

Those rocks remind me of the big marble boulders on the beach back home, very nice.

Well I added some more plants but it is still not enough. None of the stores around here seem to carry large and extra large silk plants. All they have are small and medium silk plants and all the large and extra large seem to be plastic. I would much rather have silk plants in the tank.

What I really wanted was the larger plants across the back, the smaller plants spread throughout the rocks and driftwood, and the front slightly open, but I am not sure if this is going to happen now.

Anyway, here is a picture with the new small and medium plants I added:

So much for waiting until my next paycheck. I went completely crazy in the store today and bought everything except the fish. Here is the finished product:

I got bored today and decided to rearrange the tank. I think it looks much better now.
