Stupid MTS
Alright, well I already ordered a divider for the 10 for another Betta. I'm about done with my 55 freshwater, so me and my roommate talked it over and decided to get a saltwater reef setup for the living room. I jumped on Craigslist last night and low and behold, there was a 55, already set up with freshwater fish (angels and barbs...not gonna say anything to her about that), stand, lights, filter, etc, etc, local (small town so that's rare) for a great deal...I pick it up tomorrow morning...
So, as of about a month ago, I had 0 gallons, now tomorrow I'll have a total of 120 gallons...and just think, all this could have been beer money for this college student...

Well, it's not a 55...
It's a 75! Just pulled in the driveway and I have to clear some room to set it up. Very heavy! It's also got some inhabitants already, so until I find homes for them, it'll be freshwater. It also had tons of live plants, so I'm going to steal a few of those for my 55. It was a very nice setup, and they only reason they sold it is because they were moving...Needs a few things, I'm not crazy about the heater it came with, though if I set up a sump for the saltwater, it won't be that big of a deal because you won't see it. I'm stoked! Pics this evening after it's set up again...

Glad you're not peeing your money! Wellcome to MTS, and as Dave (David C) says... "I don't suffer from MTS... I enjoy every minute of it!"

Well, I finally got it set up with water and the filters and heater running. Then I had to go to work (where I am now). I got the fish in and they were all doing fine; I think I may steal a few before I find them homes. My tetra school in my 55 grew to 8 (mix of neons and cardinals, but they all school together). I may take the cories as well so that would give me 4 different species of cories in my 55, and I really like the clown loach, though I'd want to get another so he wouldn't be bored. The angelfish was pretty torn up from the one tiger barb, but I already have a friend who said he would take the barb off my hands. It also came with a common pleco, a few swordtails, a school of glowlight tetras (like 20 of em), and some others I couldn't identify. All fish survived the 45min ride home in a sealed 5gallon bucket.
Only bummer is the light fixture doesn't work...my fault for not checking it while I was there cause I probably could have knocked $20 off the price. My roommate is working on an engineering degree, so maybe I'll make him fix it, lol. Both filters are Whisper 60s (same as the one that came with my 55 but was terribly noisy, these are super quiet). The heater is a visi-therm 200watt, but that will be upgraded to a larger unit for my sump when the tank goes salty. Plants are HUGE. Their root system is quite large, will I need to cut them down a bit before I replant them in my tank? I'll post pics to get IDs of the fish and plants later tonight.
PS, the change to salt is not happening for a month or two, so where can I find information on setting up a sump? Will an empty 10 gallon work? The lady also gave me everything under the tank in the stand, which included a "livewell aerator" pump. It appears to have been used at one point for the tank, any idea on what that's for?
Thanks!

Update. Tank has bloodfin tetras, cherry barbs, serpae tetras, swordtails, a pleco, glowlight tetras, an angelfish, and a tiger barb. Got an add up on Craigslist for all fish for free (anyone here wants some and wants to instruct me how to ship, no problem). It has lots of live plants and some good rocks. Also got the light working and tested the livewell pump which will work great at 500 gph. Gonna build the sump this week and order a bunch of stuff for the saltwater setup. Hope to have live rock and sand in the tank within a month or so. Anyways, pics:

Well, here's an update. Getting ready for the big change over to saltwater. I still need to order a few things, but it should be a pretty good setup. I won't be able to add the sump for a while, so the protein skimmer will just hang on the back, and the heater will stay in the setup. Here's an updated picture. We had to move it because my new couch would not allow the tank to sit in the living room like I wanted (nice 11'x12' sectional), but it's new location is actually better, making use of wasted space in the dining room, and is more visible from the couch in the living room because of the angle. I can't wait to get some live rock in there...

Nope, I asked the guy if he wanted it, he did, so I let him have the plants too. They were too wide for my 55 tank, and I really like the current setup in there. This new one will be salt, so no need for the plants there.
Plus side, I think I just found a guy who will trade me 2 20gallon tanks (one for the sump, one for something else I guess) for my old ferret cage that's been sitting in storage for the past 2 years. Coming along faster than I thought, planned, or budgeted for...
I'm also bidding on a protein skimmer on eBay...

Ok, as long as you didnt throw it away lol, that swordplant was huge! A 20g sump would be great for your 55g SW, maybe make the other 20g an isolation tank?

Imagine thinking you were getting a great deal on a 55g tank and then learning it was 75g! Oh the happiness I would feel!
Looking good, keep us posted!

Lol, it will be a 75 saltwater. And I'm not the type to throw stuff away (got that from my dad). I still have 2 power filters that I don't need and make a lot of noise, but they have parts...lol.

Oops lol, I forgot the tank you got ended up being a 75! So adding a 20g sump gives you almost 100 gallons, that will be a nice SW setup
