I'm not sure. I have angels that are perfectly happy in tanks with no peat moss or drift wood where the pH remains higher than in my main tank. (I forget what my tap water ph is, I think like 7) My concern was just that the shells would make it extremely high. What's the ph now. I don't know how much of an extreme they can be in and not suffer. I don't know what affect it would have on them, burning eyes? damage their slime coat? I'd look for some nice rocks to build caves with instead. Just make sure you always test them too.

Spray painting,IMO,is the easiest and cheapest background you can get.Tape off everything but the back, get some acrylic spray paint,I always spray at least 4 coats, and your done.No tapeing on a background. All my tanks have been painted, most black, but I have 1 with a dark blue background, and 1 that is dark purple.Just a tip if you get another tank.Yours looks great BTW!

Have you tried to paint a mural on the back of a tank first, and then paint over that with several coats of black paint? I think I would have a problem with one solid color on anything bigger than a 20 gal. tank. Although I do like the idea better than a white textured wall as a background. Very nice idea.
