In nature shellies colonize vast fields of empty shells from the Neothauma tanganicensi snails in Lake Tanganika.
In the aquarium they will use just about any shell, some of them are such a tight fit you wonder if their going to get stuck.

If you startle them they all head for shells and the tank looks empty LOL
They have already started moving the sand around. I might post a couple more pics and show how they re-arrange their tank.

Most likely
Their still re-arranging the tank(turning shells, moving sand etc) when they settle in good I expect to see little fry swarm out of a shell

question about the shells: how do you prepare them for the tank? i know people who have taken sea shells, thoroughly washed them only to have fish suddenly die. Are these special shells, or do you have some secret ninja technique of cleaning them?

Nick I'm sorry I haven't responded, for some reason I hadn't realized there had been an addition to the thread. Usually I just rinse the shells since I buy them at the dollar store or at one of the pet stores.
Well I think they have finally finished moving things around. They have cleared sand all the way to the bottom in a small spot on the left, and stacked it really high in other places.
Check the pics and see the difference. I had nothing to do with the changes they did it all

Carol,
When you do have fry to sell, I would definetly like to buy some off of you. I have tried to find shellies near me and have had no luck. I have a tank and shells waiting for them, just no fish! PM me when you have some available
Thanks,
Kate

Slakey-
I had six or eight adults in the 30 long plus colonies of fry without any problems. They seem to have a very low bioload.
The problem with most tanks is that they are too tall. Most shellies and Multis in particular really only consistantly use the bottom half. Since you really can't put upper level fish in, the top half is wasted. Thats why I like to keep them in a twenty or thirty long after they start to multiply. I had that many in the thirty long because of the floor space (30L=36x12inches) (29= 30x12inches)
They appreciate some floating plants, I use water sprite and let the roots hang down, they like swimming around in the roots but don't seem to do this in a tall tank.
Shawnie - They seem to get upset if I mess with/ re-arrange their sand They work like mad to "fix" it if I do LOL

They are such amazing/neat little fish. I want to get some if I ever get into cichlids. Those will probably be one of the top ones on my list.
Great looking tank by the way! I also didn't know that you kept cichlids heh =)

Haha. I tried cichlids(julies) but they all died on me except my male. I think they were bad fish =/ cause my tank readings were perfecto. Oh welll
I wish my 30 tall was a 30 long. The female montezuma sword tail and silver angel are currently living in it are looking for a home(Used to have a trio of montezuma swordtails but other two disappeared and silver angel was 2 bucks at LFS so I just got him) Everything that I have kept in that tank just hasn't worked out and wanted to try these guys. But I guess I should be happy with what I have =)

Lol,
Never settle! Always strive for more.. more fish.
Carol, is your batch getting along really well? We aren't having any aggression on our end from them. (I think we both have some of the same batch?) Our last tank of them (a 55g) went from nearly 20-25 of them to 2 in the matter of 6-8 months, but these seem to be doing really well.

Yes some of them are from the same batch and seem to being doing really well.
They are making spawning pits, burying shells, moving sand and claiming territory but I think the females are still a little young. You just never know with Multis
