My 20g/Long Planted
Hi, I'm a new member so I thought I'd post my tank.
It's my first planted and it's a 20g long tank. It has 6 cherry barbs, 3 peppered corys, and 2 otos. They are all on the small/young side and eventually I think i'll get a larger community tank to grow the groups. So many ideas, not enough money/space hehe.
Anyway, it's my first tank in awhile and I'm really enjoying it. Everyone gets along well. The 2 male cherrys are fun to watch interact, and the three corys are full of personality!

Very nice tank!
What brand and watt heater are you using and what filter?
I plan on getting a a 20g, but can't decide on a kit or the long.

Thanks for the comments.
Lucy: The heater I'm using is "Marineland Visi-Therm Stealth Submersible" 100watt. Has been working well, easy to use and seems to be accurate.
The filter I'm using is "Marineland Penguin 150 BIO-Wheel Power Filter", which works great. I like it a lot.
Both have been great for me so far actually.
I like the 20long a lot, especially since I wanted more room for the corys and plants. I also like the look. Just my opinion though. I guess it also depends on what type of fish you want to stock.

Great tank! how many watts is the light? Is the amazon sword easy to care for for the most part? I have seen them in my pet store and I am thinking about buying one.

a 30 (29gal) is the same size, just 33% taller. just another option...
btw: i used to keep my toads in a 20L with live plants...but it proved too much work. Now they just get fake plants. still in the 20L though, makes a great terrarium.

Your plants look great! I just started with planted tanks too and I am really excited about it. I love the simplicity of your tank. It is a charming setup.

drumbum540: I actually have 2 lights going. I bought a standard hood with light (oops) which is 20w, but I soon realized it wouldn't be enough for some of the plants I wanted. So I bought a glass hood, used the standard 20w light and added a "Coralife T-5 Single Linear Strip" (18w) which is thin enough to fit on there as well.
My Amazon Swords were given to me when I had only the standard light (1wpg) , which is one reason I upgraded my wpg to almost 2wpg (being a long tank also helps I think). Since then they have been doing much better. Hard to tell if it's still enough light, but they seem ok.
I also switched the normal bulb in the standard light with a 20w 'Flora-Glo', which is supposed to be better for planted setups. Though to be honest I cannot tell if it has helped at all cause I added the T-5 at the same time.
King_Snuggles: The filter is pretty quite. The only time it will begin to make noise is if the water level is low, but that hasn't been an issue for me at least. Evaporation doesn't affect it enough with normal water changes.
I don't use CO2 and the plants seem to do well. I do have some fertilizer that I am keeping in case it looks like they will need. So far, so good without either. Just as a note I have mostly lower light plants including java ferns, java moss, Cryptocoryne Wendtii.
I am really happy I decided to try plants. Bit more maitenance/cost, but nothing too much. And for me it has been fun adding and keeping them going. I would recommend to anyone who thinks they may want to.

I know! they look bigger. Mine is a 30gl but doesn't look nearly as big as this one! Lovely planting. Can't wait to move out of the in-laws. I will be in fishy heaven then!
BTW- help? please?
Two puffers and a moray?
Edit- Wait! How many gallons is a 20 LITER? I thought it said 20 gl. No wonder.. haha.

Yeah, it looks great. I think that the higher the light you have the lower the chances are of having algae if you have Co2. and algae can make plant leaves look ugly after a couple weeks. I'm just giving you something to think about. you don't need it, as long as you have good algae eaters and occasionally scrub plant leaves. Thats sneaky what you did with the T-5, haha.
