Thanks Harley and NP.

I think my wife is too? maybe, she wants the other tank setup as a Paludarium with fish and maybe frogs.

Will have to post it in a different section for help and ideas on that?

Thanks COBetta, we didn't get any new fish...yet. lol We need to get the 20Gal figured out and setup before anymore fish. And if we add any to the cichlid tank, i think they will eat them. lol All the ones at our LFS's are about .5-1in long. The ones in our tank are from about 2in up to 6ish inches. Even with the same species of Cichlids, I don't see a good outcome.

Gosh that tank looks so cool. Ok I'm getting jealous now

I stand corrected. I do not have yellow tails. They are female Red Fin Borelyi. I had to re-read my post in the cichlid section. The link I gave you is for Yellow tails though.

Mine are female Red Fin's(click for link).

Thanks and sorry.

Hmm.. I misread your post. Do you have any local fish clubs and/or cichlid breeders? That would be the best bet for finding cichlids the right size. Or maybe do the MTS thing and setup a tank to grow the younger cichlids in until they catch up to the size of the older ones, at least enough to make it in the tank?

The Red Fins get up to about 8". Our Male we have is about 6 already.. So depending on how many you want and the tank they are going in, just make sure they all fit first. The Yellow tails get up to about 6. Not a huge difference but if you plan on a bunch...you probably know this already though. I personally like the Red Fins because I think the Male looks better then the Male Yellow Tail. Just my personal preference though.

Female Red Fin

Male Red Fin (The picture doesn't show the amount of color he actually has)

Female Yellow Tail (Looks like the Female Red Fin)

Tank will be a 55g, once I get it repaired, and she definitely wants some Electric Yellows; we'll get 3 females and 1 Male. That'll leave us with 35" to 'play' with and I'd get 3 females and a male with adult sizes at about 4"-6".

The Yellow Tail Acei's look to be a possible contender, so your 'mistake' was actually good

Other contenders are:
  • Pseudotropheus Lombardoi (Kennyi Cichlid)
  • Aulonocara Nyasse
  • Aulonocara hueseri
  • Aulonocara kandeense

Those are all pretty cool looking. Wish I had a bigger tank...but 46Gal is good for us for now. Can't wait to see what you do with the 55.

It'll be a while as I've got to get my female Betta's in their own tanks first, then the wife has given me the go ahead to make the laundry room a fish room (will be doing a log about that in the Member Blogs section), that sure is going to be fun plus the other million and one things I gotta do

One of the reasons I live on

Help! I didn't want to start another topic. I renamed my other one but hasn't gotten a response yet. HERE is the link. Our Yellow Lab is digging under the yellowish rock. He/She has gotten down to the glass too. You can see some pics in the link above. I can get some more as it is a pretty big spot. Also does anybody know if our Yellow Lab is a male or female? And why is it digging like that? It hasn't started until about a week ago. Now they are just a gravel moving machine and will sometimes just sit under there with it's back to the hole. Any ideas??

Uploaded some more pics.

Start of hole

Lab hiding next to the hole (you can see the glass and what looks like a buldging stomach)

Saying cheese! with work done so far (left side of rock)

You can see the stomach again and I'm not sure what they're doing

Tried to get the right and front of the rock.
You can see the glass under the front and the base of the plant holder exposed.

An attempt at a close-up which isn't that effective on an angle with a bow front. The brownish/gold in the front under the rock is the underside of the rock.

Rare "In Action" shot of them actually moving the rocks. Was hard to get, I swear they hear the camera turn on in the other room.

I don't know much about Cichlids but from what I understand, I'd say you have one happy Male. I hear it's the males that do most of the digging. Like I said, not to familiar with them. My friend has a Bumblebee and he digs to the glass regardless of gravel depth.

Thanks COBetta. He has actually dug even further, the rock in the 2nd to last pic is now just about on the glass leaning against the rock formation. I read that the males will dig for spawning. Not sure if he is trying to mate with one of the female Redfins as there is 3 of them. The water temp is ideal from everything I read thermometer says 74-82 (all are colored). and the water seems to be fairly clean (put new filter in HOB). The only thing is with his digging, he is stirring it up, but I spose that is not bad, just helping clean the gravel.

Anyone know for sure if this is a male or female? The anal fin has a little black with 1 white spot on it, think its called an egg spot.

I'm almost sure those spots are found on males only. Again, I don't know a whole lot about them but that's what I've read as I try to help my friend with his cichlid tank. As I said, his cichlid digs and is the only fish in the tank. It is spawning behavior but I don't think they need potential mates to get in to it. I've read of them digging 4 foot wide holes in the wild. Anyway, I'll go out on a limb to say your fish is for sure a he.
