Ianthe's Tanks

5.5 gallon: 1 copper veiltail male betta, Penny:

5 or 6? gallon (got from my brother): 1 yellow guppy, Willis, and 2 cory cats:

Hm, wondering if maybe the white gravel is too bright for them :/

Cute little tanks. The gravel looks fine, some people say that fish are more safe feeling with darker substrates, but white is probably better than nothing.

Good job.

Why is the water level so far below the rim of the tanks? The general principle is that it should be around 1/2" or so below the top. Or in the case of an internal filter, about even with the lip on the outflow.

I think it creates a nice 'waterfall of bubbles' effect, personally, but I am interested to hear what Ianthe's reason(s) is/are.

Is the 5/6g tank a corner tank? If so, I believe those are 5g and that's a beautiful guppy in there.

That's one of the reasons, especially for the guppy/cory tank, to give them more aeration, and they like playing in it. My other reason is that there are some open spaces in the back and I don't want them to jump out (I lost my first betta that way ). It's also evaporated a little from where I usually fill it to (been a week since last water change). I have been thinking of getting some kind of mesh to cover the back spaces, to calm my fears, and then raise Penny's water level at least.

It's a hexagonal... seems to be a little bigger than the rectangle 5.5, though that could be a trick of shape. The entire tank (well let's just say the actual tank and the fish) were a rescue of sorts from my brother a few months ago. He was keeping them in 3 inches of filthy water, no gravel, heater, filter, anything, so it's a miracle they're all doing so well.

The shelf liner in the housewares department (the kind that's a little puffy with lots of small holes in it) is what we use to cover holes. We cut it to size, then secure it with box tape.

The Hexagon tank would be a 5g. We have 2 of those. We got a male platy and a tank with conditions like your brother's tank. It's amazing how tough some of those little fish can be.

Shelf liner.. didn't know it came in a holey variety. I'll check that out next time I'm out. The idea I had was window screen material, but that's probably sold in really big pieces.

Hi!
Cute tanks! I've been thinking about getting a 5 gallon tank myself.. I really want a Betta!
I have a little space in the back of my tank too... Lol I'm cheap so I just took some tin foil and taped it over to cover the space... You probably already have some so it won't cost anything.

Yea, I think you can find it at Dollar Tree too, cheaper than wallyworld.

I'm not sure how a Betta would take the reflective tin foil.
