Close look at eggs in the nest

I spawned my Mustrad Gas pair today......I did it in a 10 gallon so I could try and get some clear shots of the process...Here is the view from underneath the almond leaf of the bubble nest with eggs in it....Mom took a beating this time but she is recovering good.....

Use the before and after photo of Mom as a reminder why breeding Bettas should not be taken lightly..

Yep Pink......It's sad what they do to one another but they sure look like they were having fun lol....Now Daddy is learning that if you play you pay! He's got a slue of eggs to tend to tonight (poor guy) Remember Dunn raised his spawn last time...

The photos are fantastic! Poor little Nichole. I hope she makes a quick recovery, and that Maui behaves like a proper dad this time around.

Great shots!

I don't think I've ever seen the vertical mating lines before.
Good luck with Daddy on this one.
How long until you know if the eggs need a surrogate?

We are now 8 hours into it and Daddy is doing a fantastic job rotating the eggs.....I had to leave for a while and when I came back he had moved them all....I won't need a surrogate this time thank goodness because Mr. Dunn is retired lol.....

Pam, Nichole is a tough little cookie..She beat the tar out of him last time so maybe it was her turn..Poor little thing...She's pigging out as usual so she must not be too traumatized ..

Here is Dad doding over his babies...It looks like he has a smile on his face...

We are 24 hours into it now and all is going great! I was a little nervous to look into the tank this morning since my last spawn ended up with a whole clutch of hatching fry being eaten by their Dad! He has moved the eggs around but none appear to have been eaten....I'll be waiting for tails to drop from the eggs today for some AWESOME shots!

Thank you all for your nice comments and support...You are great! Oh Shawnie, there's always time for Mother Goose at my home lol

Approaching 36 hours and all is well.....There are a LOT of eggs and Maui has proven himself as an attentive betta Daddy......The eggs were falling out fster than he could put them back up and I thought he was going to get frustrated but he ended up being a trooper...At about 36 hours they start hatching and they begin to swim back up to the nest on their own.....I saw something today that I had never seen in the past...I could see the little guys wiggling around in their sac when they were on the ground.....

I hope this info helps someone in the future....I have a passion for these fish and want to help educate future breeders......

Here are a couple of photos from today....The little white balls on the bottom are eggs...In the 2nd photo you can see a tail! Maui is not green he is blue but the almond leaf turns the water an amber color which has made photographing very difficult....

48 hours have passed...Alot went on in this tank last night while I was asleep.....He completely moved the whole spawn to another location! I looked under the almond leaf and sighed....All the fry were gone.....I got the magnifying glass and looked under the plate I had put in there when I began the spawn and to my surprise I saw a whole lot of hanging tails!

Here are the fruits of Maui's labor hanging from their new bubble nest.....This poor guy must be tired!

We are free swimming today! 72 hours old and my spawn has made it through another night..I removed Daddy this morning as he looked worn out....He is eating and recovering now.....

Here is what 72 hour old Betta fry look like....I have never been able to get shots like this in the past because I spawned in plastic tubs before...It is so cool to see this whole process unfold right before my cameras lense...

I thought I'd post a couple photos of what a spawn tank should look like...I know a few members have tried to spawn in a full 10 gallon with gravel and did not have success...A spawn tank is far from any show/display tank....It must be funtional not pretty....

Notice the water level...It is 4 inches deep...This is so the male can easily pick up the eggs/fry and not become overtired....The water is dark Amber from the Indian Almond leaf put in before spawning...It serves as a spawn enhancer and a water conditioner...NOT a pretty picture but VERY necessary in a successful spawn....The tank is bare bottom with nothing but a Christmas moss, a silk flower for hiding, an almond leaf, a thermometer and heater...Last notice the walls of the tank dripping with humidity...This creates the perfect enviorment for hatching of the eggs...The tank is kept tightly covered with a steady temp of 80 degrees.....

OK, I'm done rambling now lol.....This spawn tank sits next to my desk in my office so I can closely monitor the breeding and the fry....
