I haven't kept them so I can't offer any direct experience, but the idea of getting "one" for your planted tank might need to be reconsidered.

Almost all loaches are social fish that need to be in groups, and this species is no exception. From loaches.com:

A very social fish, it is best to keep them in groups of three or more.

Polkadot loaches can be boisterous fish that like the company of their own kind. They love to gather together in certain shelters and can often be seen interacting with each other.

I have a group of 5 in a 55. Beautiful fish, it's terrible that I hardly ever see them. They spend most of their time under cover among the driftwood.

Sabi I too have kept them before and they are beautiful loaches. They do better in a small group and mine were kind of shy despite having lots of hiding places and plenty of caves. They seemed to be more stand offish than yoyos or striata. Both of those are about the same size but more out in the open and friendly.
Hope that helps
