A service announcement '-)

Hi Well after reading a lot of posts on breeding livebearers..and wanting fry. I just want to show how quickly a tank can be overcrowded. Please know that Im not trying to burst anyones bubble and the fry are such sweet babies, but its not like you can re-home them soon after. They normally have to be about 2 months old or an inch and a half before a LFS will take them. {walmart, petco, petsmart do not take your fish} So while waiting for your fry to grow, they need an adequate tank to grow healthy. Also they need almost a daily wc, ( depending how many are born into the tank ), and they need good food not just flake food. And the females will keep producing, even if you decide to separate the males from the females
While this is just my little way of letting the potential platy, livebearer, 'breeders' see the future..lol..I do wish you good luck if its planned well..

Although over crowded it's an awesome site! Thanks for sharing and I'm sure it will be helpful especially to people with live bearers.

It's really easy to get big ideas about breeding fish and "selling" them to the LFS. Your film brings home reality more than anything anyone can say. Nobody is going to get rich breeding fish at home I'm lucky that my LFS will trade me supplies for angel fry but they have to be quarter size so that's about three months old.

Funny video!

Not so funny situation, if your LFS won't take them until they're old enough to breed.

Craigslist allows for re-homing pets for free (some people charge fees & stuff, but I'm always wary.)

I gave away seven platy fry (I let the hornwort be the only protection) when they were about, oh, 5/8" or so, not quite a month old. It was to someone with whom my sister works, so she told me they made it and they're fine.

Someone out there probably wants at least a couple of those adorable babies, and in my very limited experience, you can move them safely before they're pubescent.

Thanks for the belly laugh!

Good morning. Just a reminder to check the date of the original post before responding. This thread is fairly old.
Thanks!
