How do you tell if a Platy is pregnant?

the pregnant female will appear much fuller in the abdomen (belly) and you can see a dark patch just behind her belly (this is only visible on light colored variations such as sunburst and white platies)

she will give birth within some 30 days to anywhere from 2 to 20 fry (based on my experiences; numbers will vary greatly). The fry are very easy to care for and feed. Use crushed flake food, commercially traded liquid or powder fry foods, or newly hatched brine shrimp.
