I've read that it is common for swordtails to breed with platy. Has anyone done this or even heard of it? What are the chances of this happening?

yes it is possible because the genus is the same but you can end up with genetic problems. You would also be stuck with the babies because the LFS most likely will not take them. If it is a platy or swordtail male with out any females of his own kind and without the presence of the male of the other species.

Crossing swordtails and platies is how all the different color strains of swordtails and platies were developed.
I know of no genetic issues that arise from these crossings.

Any combination of different sexes of platies and/or swordtail will produce fry.
