how many types of mollies and platies are there.

Platies and swordtails are in the genus 'Xiphophorus'.

Mollies are in the genus 'Poecilia'. The problem with that is that so are guppies, endler's, and many other livebearers, but atleast here you can see the common names listed on the right side of page.
