Filter Fry

About a week ago, we had upgraded one of the filters on our 65g. (our 65g is mainly livebearers) In the process of removing the old filter and cleaning it out, I came across 2 fry... I was totally stunned. I am not sure how long they were in there before I found them, but they were still kicking.

I cant believe they made it. Not thinking that there might be anything in the filter other than dirty water, I had inadvertanly dumped them into the sink, when I saw something moving, I immediately stopped up the sink, added water conditioner and splashed in some water. And the little buggers lived!!

I then set up a breeder net in the 65g and put them in there.... and as of today they are still going. Instead of just throwing them back in the tank, I decided to grow them out in the breeder, as I am very curious as to who they belong to. They are still very tiny, but one looks like it may be a dalmation molly (of sorts) and the other looks like a platy. My females are always pregnant and always dropping, so I am unsure if they are what they appear to be.

The dalmation might be a mix of a dalmation mom and a creamsicle dad. And the platy can be a number of MM variants. I hope they make it!! Ill post a pic as soon as they are large enough for you guys to see em.

I love mystery fry!!

It's something, but somehow they can end up in the filter box. We once found 4 platy fry in the filter box. Best of luck with your new-found fry.

Isnt it funny how, at times, when you are trying to do something, it always gets ugly... and yet when you dont care in the least, you get the best results.

I am hoping they make it! It took a day or two before they would eat... they are eating now. But they are sooo small. I hope the filter ordeal didnt stunt thier growth or anthing.

One looks all white and the other looks as if there are some spots near the tailfin. I am so curious as to what these little guys are!

Do you have Vitachem or Fish Protector to add to the water?

CO, I dont have any vitamins at the moment...

...but since my last post, they are now more active and they are eating well. I think all will be fine... I think they are platys, but cant be sure... yet!

Liquid vitamins help them grow healthier. Cyclopeeze flakes help them grow faster. Neither is necessary, but both are good if it's worth the money to you.

CO -

... thanks for the tip!!...

I always have an eye out at the LFS, but they never have vitamins... Im going to have to purchase some from DFS (or the like) and I will also see if I can pick up the flake.

DFS has both. I actually feed the cyclopeeze to all of our fish here & there (don't want to constipate the betta with too much flakes). They all love it.
