Salt and livebearers

Hi everyone,

i am cycling a tank (112 gallons) at the moment with two zebra danios and chemicals called Seachem Prime and Seachem Stability.
When it is cycled i am planning to set up a comunity tank with guppys, platys, mollys, angelfish, catfish, clown loaches, tetras, gouramis and later on maybe some cichlids (not all of course). i have read that livebearers need salt in their water so i was wondering if those other fish that i mentioned would be able to handle the salinity or the livebearers would be fine without.

Thankyou,
maddy

The catfish, Angelfish and Clown Loaches can't handle any salt. The Livebearers will be fine without it.
Out of curiousity You do know the Angelfish will eat the livebearer fry.

Most Livebearers are bred and raised with out salt so not having it will not affect them.

Definitely running without salt will be much better for your tank and it's inhabitants.

I keep a Male/Female pair of sailfin mollies along with 3 gold twinbar platys in my brackish tank and they seem to love it. I have even seen pictures of mollies in marine setups. Looks kind of different.

I put salt in all my tanks and don't notice any problems. I don't own any angels currently though

I put salt in all of my tanks as well and have not had a problem. I have mollies, gourami's, Oscars, J.Dempsey's, Pleco's and loaches. Some people like using it and others don't.

There are freshwater fish that come from naturally brackish areas that probably enjoy the salt, but ultimately it comes down to: There are people that believe it is unhealthy for a lot of freshwater fish and there are people that believe it is healthy for most freshwater fish. People from neither side waiver too much in their belief and so the arguement will probably go on until scientists find a way to prove definitively which fish benefit and which do not and which are harmed by the use of salt in the freshwater aquarium.

I would be interested to see, but will never do it because I believe salt for most freshwater fish is not a good thing, a fish kept with salt and a fish kept without salt. The fish being exactly the same type in a tank by themselves, exactly the same size tank. Exactly the same care given to both tanks etc. And have the experiment done with say... 100 with salt 100 without salt (would take 200 tanks ) to prove one way or the other for that type of fish. I wish it could be done without the possibility of harming the specimens, that is why I will never do it.

(Plecos haven't the slime coat to do well with salt.)
