Does anyone have an idea of how much a small live rock at petco weighs? I was thinking possibly buying one piece each week until I get the amount of live rock I need. Would I have to do water changes during this time or is it considered still cycling? Or am I better off waiting until I can buy all the live rock at once?

Also I'm not planning on adding fish for awhile so could I put each new piece right into the tank?

I wouldnt put the rock strait into your tank you might end up with some unwanted hitchicker (mantis, aiptasia or something else ) its always a good idea to quarantine you LR before putting it in your tank. Has for adding different rokc at different time i can cause your tank to cycle again so watch out. Has for the weight of a rock a petsmart i have no clue. Hope i helped.

I have a few pieces of LR from Petco and never had an issue. As long as you make sure it's cured or give it time to cure, you should be fine.

Another source though is Craigslist.org. You'd be surprised how many people are leaving the hobby. Now while most are trying to sell their tank to one person, some probably would take offers on their LR. And you should never pay more than $2.00 per pound from there.

For my 95 gallon tank that I'm currently setting up, I bought 85 lbs of used LR for $100.

I have been adding my live rock peice by peice. And it is perfectly fine! Once you have all you need, or you start getting a bloom in algae, and your cleanup crew.

then leave it to cycle for a while, then you're good to go.
As for someone saying about it recycling if you add it peice by peice. You have no fish in there, so it doesn't matter :P
