How to reduce the smell from live rock in the aquarium?

Ok guys so I got the tank 55 gallon, sump and protein skimmer for $175 on craigslist. My question is how can I reduce the smell from the rock wile my tank cycles? I figured that if I buy my rock from LFS I would be reducing the die off. I will be paying a premium @ $8 lbs. for the rock. But if my theory is right that should take care of the smell. I live in a small apartment so the option of cureing it in a container is out of the question. The reason for me not wanting the smell is that my wife is not too happy with the two tank idea of mine, so if I was to get some dead smell in the house that would be a big problem. Thanks.

If your live rock is cured and you get it home quickly from the LFS, it shouldn't smell at all. Uncured live rock smells terrible. You'll know if it is cured.

I went ahead and cycled my tank with a raw shrimp even though I got cured rock, just to be safe. I wouldn't recommend it but others may disagree.
