hmmmm (live rock)

at my LFS live rock costs around 11$ lb .. if you buy over 20 lbs i think that is tho..

i've seen on websites in the states they can ship u like a 24lb box of live rock for aroudn 140 + shipping and stuff. this is WAY cheaper, anyone know any companies like this that wud do this in canada?

Look around for another LFS. Here it's $9 a pound for shelf rock straight from fiji, and it gets cheaper for branch rock or other pieces. I wouldn't pay more than $5 a pound...

$5 to $6 at the LFS sounds reasonable for good quality live rock. DFS has good rock, not sure if they ship to Canada though. Check premiumaquatics.com too. I have never purchased anything from them before though, so can't comment on them.

Yes, just be sure you are buying from a reputable site. As Mike said, DFS is good (I've bought LR from them twice), but I don't know if they ship to Canada.

ah thanks for the replies guys i've found a canadian supplier online.. actually their store isn't too far from where i live so i mite pop in there in person. Hopefully i can get my tank up and running sometime before the summer

How much live rock shud i get for a 30 gal tank? i was thinking about getting about 20lbs and then later on add more wud this be sufficient?

You'll notice real fast that 20lbs of live rock isn't very much rock. 20 lbs is good to start with, but generally you need about 1 lb per gallon for a good start on the cycle. 20 lbs sint really that much.It sounds like a lot,but once you see it,sitting in the aquarium,it wont seem like 20 lbs.

its not the amount thats worrying me... its the price :P if its absolutely necessary to get at least 30 lbs i can hold off tho its no biggie.

No it's not absolutely necessary to have 30 lbs of live rock all at once. If you wanted you could probably get LR rubble for your sump (if you're using a sump) to make up the difference. Rubble is usually about $1/lbs.

Glad you found someone in Canada where you can get some LR. And to answer your other question, I added my LR in stages too. In my 65 gallon, I probably started with 30 lbs or so. I then added more twice. I'm now sitting around 75 lbs or so counting what's in the sump.
