Lighting goldfish?

This new-to-me tank came with what I think is a reef light - it's got a white light, a blue light, and little blue LED's, all on separate switches. I like it a lot, and my daughter loves the blue light.

Is the blue light safe for goldfish? I know I need to keep them on a good lights on / lights off schedule, but I don't know about this new lighting. It's a 48" light, 260 watts --- the 48" version of this: http://cgi.ebay.com/72-Power-Compact...QQcmdZViewItem .

I'm almost wondering if it might be worth my while to sell this light, which seems very cool to me, and use the proceeds to get something more appropriate to my setup.

Hello Anna,

It sounds like the blue lights might be Moon Lights and if they are then I don't see them doing any harm to the fish.

Hold on for more responses though. I don't have salt tank/lighting experience.

Thanks, Ken! The blue LED's are moon lights. The big blue bulbs are actinic blue lights, and the white lights are daylight bulbs.

I've been reading up on the light set up and on goldfish, and I think it's all good, but just on the bright side for goldfish. At 260W, it's giving me about 5W per gallon, which is really high. Way more than I need just to light the fish.

On the other hand, if I ever want to get into reef keeping or planted tanks, I won't need to upgrade.

With that many watts and if the light is setting directly on the tank, it may warm the tank up too much. Something to keep an eye one.
