I have all my tanks on a timer and they're all set to come on at 8:30am and go off at 8:30pm. I chose that schedule because we can see the fish in the morning without the lights and in general, I put my daughter to be at 8:30pm so there's no point in keeping the lights on if I'm not going to be looking at the tank.

Some people recommend only 8 hours for non-planted tanks. Some break that 8 hours up into smaller blocks of time, like four hours on in the morning, off for four hours and then on again for four hours. I keep mine on 12 hours because 2 out of 4 tanks are planted, and it's easier to keep them all on the same schedule.

i too keep my tanks on timers, my 75g comes on around 9am and off around 10pm and my reef tank is staggered on 3 different lights, with the blue actinic on at 8am and off at 8pm, the t5 on at 9 and off at 5 and then my moonlight lights come on at 8pm till 8am
timer are so much easier to keep a consistent environment fo r the fish

Good morning,

I have moved your thread to the Lighting section of the forum.

I have my tank lights come on at 7am and they go off at 11am. They come back on at 3pm and off at 10pm. I like to give my fish a break during the hottest parts of the day by having the lights off. It's like a cloudy day for a few hours .
