Does lighting affect color of fish?

Hi, all. I have a fancy goldfish tank. I've had these fish for 5 months, and they've gone through their color changes, but after the first month they pretty much have stayed the way they are. I went on vacation and left the tank light off. I came back to find my orange fish turning white - almost all white except a couple little patches of orange left. It's not a big deal either way as they're all perfectly healthy, but I'm just curious if the lighting could have made a difference? The food they were given while we were gone was the same. It does matter a little bit, actually, because one of the other two is all white, and if this one goes all white I won't be able to tell them apart. One needs a different food because of a swim bladder problem, so I hope he doesn't change all the way, but there's not much I can do about it : /

Sorry to hear about the color loss in the goldfish.

Do use any salt in the tank? What food do you give them?

What is the temperature at in the tank?

Lighting does affect the color.. but the lack of lighting turning Goldfish white? I don't think thats possible.

+1. Lighting definitely changes the perception of a fish's color. I saw it the other day at the LFS. The fish went from *WOW* with an actinic to "meh..." without it. But I'm pretty sure the amount has no bearing on the actual color.

Yeah usually it does, I used to have a incandescent over my goldfish, and he looked all washed out, and yellowish, but then I switched to a Fluorescent and now he is really pretty. This is just my situation, it could be different for you.

yes light will effect the colour of the fish, they get their pigmentation from the available light, if you leave them with out light especialy at night for an extended length of time they will loose their colour.
