Hello all! I'm new to the aquarium world and would love some helping finding the right light for my aquarium.

I have a 29 or 30 gallon aquarium that is 30" L x 12" W x about 18 1/2" H.

The hood is 30" and says 120 Volt 20 Watt 60hz on the back.

The bulb is an Aqueon 24" and says 8,000K T8 17W on it.

The tank has freshwater fish, live plants, rocks, driftwood and a sand subtrate.

I'm looking for a bulb that will make my plants grow and cast a nice colored light. Can someone please advise! If I need a new hood I'll buy one.

you shouldnt need a new hood, just a full specrum bulb. i dont know all the number mumbo jumbo they put on there but your bulb might be full spectrum. someone on the site will be able to help more or ask at your LFS. good luck!

What plants are you considering? The plants you want to purchase will impact your bulb purchase.

I'm not sure of the plant names so here is some pictures. I do plan on adding more plants. I had some others but they started looking nasty so I pulled them.

For the swords (pictures 1 and 3) you will need a different light fixture. Amazon Swords require high light (3-4 watts per gallon). Since you have a 30 gallon tank and 30 watts of light you only have 1 watt per gallon.
