What do you think of this type of set up?

Another member had this pick of their lighting setup. It is just a bathroom vanity light and I love the look of it. I have a 120 G tank that I am setting up in a couple weeks that I think I am going to stock with about 10 angel fish and a couple bloody parrots and some corys. I am also going to have some low light plants. Probably some anubias, java ferns, and some swords. Not only does this set up look very good (in my opinion) I could also get a good variety of bulbs that would put out good wattage. I looked at Lowes this weekend and they had so many different styles to choose from that it was crazy all between $50-$100, of course they had some $500.00 to choose from as well. My tank has brand new all glass tops. I don't know much at all about lighting so if any of you pros can give me some reasons not to go with a set up like this I would appreciate it so I don't wast the money.

Looks very nice. As long as you can get bulbs suitable for plant growth then I don't see too many problems. The only thing I can spot is that there appears to be bright spots with much darker areas in between each light. Not too much of a problem if you either change the light surrounds to something shorter & wider or if you have a plant layout that allows for the differences in light intensity.

Looks aces. Good thinking.

Hello FlyinLowe.

I really like your lighting idea. I have ceiling can lights over my 265g tank that I really like. My tank lights are on timers. So anytime the tank lights aren't on, I can flip the switch for the can lights and still be able to see my fish fairly well. Totally different look for the tank.

I am a bit concerned about your stocking list. Bloody Parrots with Angels. I haven't personally had that combination in my tank. I highly recommend that you add the Bloody Parrots last. If not, I'm afraid the Angels may not survive. I've seen the aggression from my Bloody Parrots towards new tank mates and it wasn't pretty. Just wanted to caution you. Shawnie may have her Bloody Parrots with Angels but I'm not certain. Hopefully she'll see this and respond. (or other members with the same combination.)

Best of luck and keep us posted. I'll be looking forward to your updates
Have a good day!

I think it's a nice look, and certainly cheaper than aquarium specific lighting. My big concern would be the amount of light you're going to lose due to a lack of reflectors. Also, 120 gallons is a lot of water for that light to penetrate. My 120 gallon planted tank has a Coralife 4x 65W strip over it and the plants do really well.

I asked in the angle fish section and didn't get much response. I haven't read a lot about the parrot fish but the few people I spoke with said they would do OK as long as the BP's had a hiding spot. I definitely want to find out first as I would hate to buy 10-12 angels and have them get destroyed. I'll keep researching.
