I have a clown pleco but do not have a moonlight. I feed him once the lights go out, and he usually runs right out to feed. In order to see him more, I placed his favorite piece of drift wood close to the side of the tank, which let's me see him anytime and he still feels secure hiding in his wood 'cave'.

I'd be interested to hear from anyone who uses a moonlight though as I have thought about getting one as well.

It isn't necessary at all.

Moon lights are purely for aesthetics, whether it's FW or SW. If you like them, go for it! It's really neat to see your nocturnal fish in action. But if it's not for you, then that's cool too.

He seems to get most his food from the DW in there, but I do also feed him algae wafers (i like Hikari). They come fairly big so I break them and feed him half or 1/4 of one once a day. I have shrimp to also pick at it.
He seems to like them a lot. I've heard some will turn away a bit from algae as they grow, but I've not seen that at all so far.
That being said, he does get a good deal of his diet from the wood and I think would do fine with feedings a little less often.

I also try to feed him some veggies on occasion, like you mentioned.

Do moonlights use infrared lighting?

Because I know that animals don't see the infrared lighting, along with reptiles. Although I don't know about the fishes though. I've only just seen infrared lighting on this TV series Planet Earth from BBC. And on other BBC David Attenborough narrated films he does.
