Completely lost with lighting!

There seems to be so many different types of lights out there that I am completely lost on which would be right for me...
I have 50L and a 400L tank that I need to find correct lighting so I can grow plants in them. I am starting with the 50L.
It has a 10W 'cool white' fluro globe that I have learnt is not good because it does not replicate the spectrum of the sun....

I've looked on online sights and there are so many options... Can someone explain what are metal halide/lamps, T5, compact tubes, moon lights, flourescent??
Also when it says like 12000K or 7000K what is that all about!?
I am a complete newb at all this technical mumbo jumbo!
I am looking at this site to order my future lights= www.aquariumproducts.com.au
Can someone tell me which woould be the best option for me for the 50L?

Thanks!

I understand your frustration for sure! If you were to check out the link above at the top of the page under quick links you will find Dr Fosters & Smith. IMO they have a great tutorial on the different types of lights and plant needs. I think if you checked them out you may find some helpful info there. They are pretty good with their articles and a great reference start.
Best of luck.. Im doing my own research at the moment as well for replacement lighting. It sure can get frustrating.

The very summarized answer is that they're all bulb/lamp types, each with its own unique characteristics.

Rather than attempt to explain the differences between them, I'll let others who've already done so answer that question

http://www.aquariumpros.com/articles.../lamptypes.pdf
http://www.americanaquariumproducts...._Lighting.html (note that much of this article is geared towards reef tanks and not freshwater plants, but his explanation of lighting types is pretty thorough).

That is the color temperature rating. I explained this concept in depth at this thread: Color Temperature: Does it matter for a planted tank?

In short, it's a general (though non-standardized) guideline for what color the light will appear to be to you.

Okay thanks for understanding guys! I'll take a look at the DFS site, although I can't buy anything from it as it would cost like a million in freight!
This is my first attempt at a proper planted tank and I want to get it right!
This site is fantastic, I've gotta say...
thanks!
