New hood?

I have a 115 litre tank with the following dimensions 60 cm long x 40 cm wide x 54 cm high. I have 2 x 15 watt standard lights which works out as about 1 WPG. Some of my plants have no leaves on the bottom and others having brown leaves which are turning transparent. I am assuming this is because a lack of lighting. If i were to opt for fluorescent lights would I need to replace the lighting unit in the hood or is it a case of simply swapping the bulbs over?

I'm not clear on what kind of lights you are using. Are they incandescent bulbs? If so, you can replace them with screw-in compact flourescents. Here is an example of what I mean.

If your light uses normal output flourescent tubes, you are pretty much stuck with the wattage that you have. You can buy bulbs with a different color temperature, but the fixture will only work with a specific type/wattage of bulb.

If you are interested in a lighting upgrade for your plants, I'd recommend a power compact strip light. Coralife and Current USA make relatively affordable models.

Yes they are incandescent bulbs. I want a lighting upgrade to aid my plants as they are currently not fairing too well. Will these compact fluorescent bulbs make much of a difference?

They defintitely will make ai difference. You can order the bulbs I have linked; or hopefully find the bulbs at Walmart. That's where I found them.

A good option to do this is rig up high wattage lights, rest them over the top of the aquarium (only if it has something to rest them on) and rig them so they can be plugged straight into the mains. On my new tank I have this rig, I'll have to see if I can dig out a photo. Good luck
