fluorescent fixture shot?

Hi guys, I've been so busy I haven't had the chance to get on here much. But I'm having an issue w/ one of my fixtures. I thought the bulb died (it was pretty close anyway, one end had turned very gray) so i got a new one, but it wouldn't turn on. So I thought I'd replace the starter (had to do that recently on another fixture) but I don't think this fixture has one, I even took it apart but all there is inside is a little box that i assume is the ballast. So is there any hope? The fixture isn't even that old, my mum thinks 2 yrs although I'd say more like 3-4. The starter wouldn't be inside the box would it? (I pried open the box but the contents are covered with tarry stuff so I cant see what's inside it)

That "box" would be the ballast. With a ballast light there is usually not a starter.
It can be replaced.
You can go to Lowes, Home Depot or a lighting supply house
and get the same rated ballast.
However......... Depending on what type it is it may be almost the same cost as a new light.

On the off chance it might work... I have a ten gallon that holds two screw in bulbs and one had not worked in quite a while. I put some white vinegar on a paper towel and wiped out the part where the bulb screws in. That fixed it and it works fine now. I guess it just had some corrosion on it.

of course UNPLUG IT FIRST
