should the light stay on day or night?

I have a ten gallon tank, when should i turn the light on and off, i usually have the light on during the day and turn it off at night, is this correct or should i be doing it the other way around?

That's what I do. It simulates day and night for them and gives them a chance to rest.

Too much light can cause algae to develop.

Bettas are awesome.

Becareful, bettas don't make great community fish especially in a 5g. Someone could get hurt or killed.

If the tank is in a room that is dark during the day you can do it the other way around but you need to have some time that is dark to simulate the day night cycle.

Greenman13-the tank is in the living room so there is plenty of light during the day but I still keep the light on, at night the only light coming through is the outdoor light i leave on at night.

Lucy -the betta will be the only fish in the tank.

Like everyone has said, you need to give them time to rest, so just make sure you give them enough dark time. I see you are using fake plants, so that really helps out your options. If you want to use your light at night so you can see them well, I would recommend covering the tank with a blanket during the day. This way you can enjoy them in the evening and night.
