Ouch! Expensive bulb!!!

My recent 33 gallon aquisition came with a 36" Coralife fixture. The bulb was broken, but not a big deal I thought...

I can't find any at any of the stores around here, and it looks like the bulb is going to be AT LEAST $50!!! ARGH!!!

I only paid $60 for the tank, stand, lighting, filters, heater, etc...

Is there something special about this bulb and fixture? Other than being two tubes joined at one end, it looks like a normal fluorescent bulb. Is there any reason it has an oddball four pin connector at only one end?

I'm really considering just trashing it and putting normal T12/T8 over my tank.

If you are handy you can make a hood with CFLs. They are cheap and work great.

corallife bulbs are expensive, our latest craigslist tank we bought has a corallife bulb w/ it on the lightfixture, we are going to put a nova sat system on it eventually, we have on on our 55 we love.

Hrm... I really can't see much success is buying a bulb over the internet. Shipping would be high, not to mention the chance of breakage... but... It looks like a solid fixture.

Anyone have a reliable, inexpensive source for one of these bulbs in Canada? ...or shippable to Canada?

we ordered our lighting fixtures from foster and smith and some bulbs, the way they were shipped they took carbord tubs to put the bulbs in the box w/ packing peanuts, no prb nothing was broken... the shipping was the norm rate too

That's the problem, there aren't many places that ship to Canada. But I'm pretty sure there is an aquarium society in Calgary or Edmonton that you might want to look into cause you can get some really good deals on fish, plants, pretty much and everything fish.

Those are the only two aquarium societies that I know of that are in Alberta, hope you find them of some use, I know the ASW is for me.

Haven't dealt with either of them yet, but they're Canadian. I'm hoping to order a Stealth from one of them soon.

I've never used or ordered lights online before, but wouldn't spending the 50+ shipping be worth it over buying a new fixture? You got the whole setup for cheap and spending that would bring you up to 110 plus shipping which is still a good deal in my book. Just thought I would throw my worthless 2c in there.

I did some looking here in town... The only place that carries them charged $96!!!!!

I ended up ordering a bulb from Vancouver. It was still $50+, but at least I have one now.

I ended up getting a 96watte 50/50 bulb. One side is 10K daylight and the other side is actinic. This thing is BRIGHT. Fish look much nicer under this light.

Those bulbs are for salty if ya didn't know the 10k is for piercing deep into the water and the actinic is for those blue's and whites that the corals need. That would be tempting to try salty if you already have the lights. Did it come with a sump and is the tank drilled.
