Aquarium Light Timing

I usually keep my aquarium light on at night and in day time i leave it off. But i was thinking that in the day time there is already light in the room. Does this stress the fish? Is it better to leave the light on in the day time and turn it off at night? Please let me know. If the light in the room is on all even if the aquarium light is off, does that effect the algae also?

Hi!

I'd say, keep it on in the day. That means the fish get a period of darkness to rest in, and you can watch them when your awake. It does not really matter!

It depends on how much light is in the room during the day and if you can control it (ie blinds, curtains)

For example, we have our tanks in the living room & dining room. So we prefer the light on in the evenings when we're home and can fish watch. In order to do this, we close the blinds during the day and try to keep the room as unlit as possible.

The lights are on a timer that come on at 2PM and go off at 11PM. Which gives them and the plants 8 hrs of "sunlight".

I like the lights on when I'm home to enjoy the fish, but always turn them off at bedtime.

The important thing to remember is that over 10 hours of direct or bright light, will cause more algae growth.

Yea, if the lights are on during the night, I'd try to make the room dark for them during the day. As long as they have a day/night cycle.
