15" fluorescent tube in 10 gallon tank hood - too small?

The hood on my 10 gallon tank has a fluorescent light that is less than the full length of the hood. It's only about 15" whereas the smallest tubes I can find for a 10 gallon aquarium are 18". Is 18" the standard? Is my hood unique?

Checking the lighting supplies at the online stores like www.thatpetplace.com and www.drsfostersmith.com for bulbs that size. They may be listed under compact fluorescent.

Good to know! I shall check that out. When I was at Petland I noticed that they only had one 15" one but tons of 18" ones. A new hood I'm considering has the standard 18" tube so that might be easier to find replacement tubes than this 15" one.

My current hood has these smaller tubes that are harder to find and a ballast that is noisy and needs to be replaced. I'm just thinking it might be better to start over.
