How to place lighting on planted aquarium?

Well, it's a pretty silly question, but here goes.......

How do you place the lighting above the tank with plants? I'm currently placing the light hood on the glass cover(used to prevent fish from jumping out), and I'm about to get a few plants. I'm afraid that placing the light on the glass cover will reduce the light entering the tank.......Or is this the right way? Or should I remove the glass cover and let the tank receive direct light?

Thanks in advance!

No, you need something between the electronics in the light and the evaporating water from the tank. A clear glass hood is fine -- it does cut the light just a little bit, but not enough to make any real difference. Just clean the glass hood good every time you take it off to do a water change.

The only safe way to put a light over a tank without a hood is to hang the light from the ceiling over the tank, keeping it a good foot or so away from the tank.
