The wattage of straight florescent tubes is governed by their length, so I don't think you can go with a higher wattage one. Besides, the ballast and circuitry is usually designed to handle the wattage of the standard bulb for the hood, and a higher wattage bulb could overload it, which has the danger of it causing a fire.
Your best alternative would be to get a different light fixture, either one with two straight bulbs, or a compact florescent one (CFs have a higher output for their size than regular bulbs).
