hot tank hood

I have got a 20 gal with hood it has two 20 watt fluorescent lamps but my problem is the hood top gets quite hot to touch ,I have been back to the store the guy said it was ok but I am a bit worried about leaving them on if I am not in the house ,I understand they will get hot where the choke is but what is a normal temperature , at the moment I am only using one at a time to cut the heat down .Can anyone tell me if this is normal ?? thanks Peter

Re: hot tank hood

What type of light is it? Is it similar to this one with the vents in the top? http://www.petco.com/Assets/product_...590525816B.jpg

Re: hot tank hood

Hi yes it is similar to that except the vents run right across the top the full width, my hood is in two sections the back half is the filter the front twin lights what do you think ?? I live in a tower block on the 12th floor so don't want to start a fire ,thanks Peter

Re: hot tank hood

Any chance of a picture?

I have a compact fluorescent fixture and if you touch it and hold your hand there it will burn you, I also have a regular fluorescent striplight and it gets warm to the touch. I don't think it would start a fire most likely but I don't know the type of hood you are talking about.

Re: hot tank hood

What brand is your hood? How many hours a day do you leave your tank lights on? Does it get hot to the point where it makes the protective cover (over the tank) hot? Does it make your tank water hot too?

Re: hot tank hood

It's OK if you can't post photos. Just tell us how many hours a day you leave your tank lights on, and if your lights get hot to the point where they make the protective cover (over the tank) hot. Does it make your tank water hot too?

Re: hot tank hood

try cuting out a section on the top of the lamp and put a computer fan in it, i think that should make you feel safer.

Re: hot tank hood

Hi I have the lights on mainly in the evenings when I am there probably about 6hrs or so a day I have a very light room so don't need them on much during the day, as for cutting out a section to put a fan in I don't have enough brains for that but I like the idea, thanks Peter

Re: hot tank hood

6 hours a day should definitely not cause your fixture to overheat. I don't know why it's so hot. If it's standing directly over the protective tank cover, maybe get "legs" for your light. If you can find them, you just attach them to your fixture and this way the light does not touch the tank's cover (and won't make it hot). As for the heating of the fixture itself, maybe get a fan for it? There are fans for aquarium lights on many online fish stores.
