lighted hood???

Hello again...more questions.

I have a 40 gal bow front tank with three large fish (10-11 inch each) plus a algea eater and am in bad need of a better lighted hood. I was told to turn off the light at night and then back on in the morning to let the fish sleep. well everytime i do that the three large fish will be spooked and swim full force into the tank walls. this has given the two female bad spots on their noses that is very slow to heal. do i need a lighted hood with different colored lights? maybe something that will just dim the light at night and then bring it slowly brighter at morning. the hood i have now is just one long florescent light that is instantly bright when turned on. i know the fish can not blink to keep from being blind when it comes on.

i have seen several great looking tanks and would like to rebuild my tank from the botton up and would like it to look great as well. any suggestions??

Re: lighted hood???

Flourencent lights cannot be wired with dimmer switches unfortunatly. Perhaps a second tube with a lower wattage that you can turn on independently? Or perhaps turning on the room lights before turning on the flourescent light will lessen the shock?
This is all I can think of off-hand, maybe one of the more experienced gurus can shed more light on the issue :

Re: lighted hood???

Do you know the light temperature of your bulb? You might want a 'cooler' bulb. This link should give an idea of how many fl. bulbs you can find: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...04+113350&va=1.

It may not be doable, but would it be possible to turn the hood up so that the bulb was facing the direction of the tank front rather than facing down into the tank and turn the light on in that position. Then after the fish have had a few minutes of 'partial light', you could put the hood back in the normal position?
