Cycling new tank

Hi All
First time user. I am in the process of having a 6x2x2 tank built, and currently running a 60 litre tank about 2years old. Was wondering weather I can use water from my existing tank to kick start the cycling process or should I start fresh? I intend to transfer most of the fish I have into the larger tank.

Welcome to Fish Lore
The water doesn't contain enough bacteria to seed your tank. What I would suggest is you either run your new filter in the 60 liter tank (along with the one that's in there) or put the filter media from the new filter in your established tank. Leave it there for at least 2 weeks. That should allow enough time for bacteria to develop.

hi and welcome

i'm with lucy, all the water would really do is add nitrAtes to your new tank the best thing to do is seed some gravel in a nylon stocking and lots of filter media in your tank. that should help move things along immensely.

I'll do that. I'll post some before shots as well. Just have to study up on how to go about uploading the pics. Computers and I work on a 'need to know basis'! Should I start a new thread?
