stocking Kuhlis

Well, I was just thinking it's strange to be counting Kuhlis for 3-4 inches of fish each, when their body mass is so much less than a "normal" 3-4 inch fish...so, do they have to be counted for that many inches each or can they be stocked more heavily than, say, 4 inch barbs?

Also, I saw in another post that dither fish are recommended...are these necessary (especially for the black kuhlis which are naturally more active), and if so would Cories or tetras serve this purpose?

Re: stocking Kuhlis

Well it also depends how much of waste producers they are. Like a 5" angel will produce more than 5 1" tetras. I think Carol will be the best one to answer your question. It also depends slightly on how good of filter and how much water changes you want to perform. I'm performing larger than normal water changes until I can sex my BN's from the extra waste, so you can do that if they end up producing a lot. Best to wait for Carol

Are dither fish fish that make other fish secure and not hide as much. I think I have heard about them before. If so it would be helpfull for fish that hide alot.

Re: stocking Kuhlis

Dither fish are small active fish that are sometimes used with timid fish. Basically, since the dither fish are always out and swimming around, the more shy fish will feel comfortable coming out, because they know there must not be predators around or the dither fish would have gone to hide.

Dither fish may help fish that hide a lot, or may not--it depends on the type of fish. Some fish, such as catfish, are nocturnal by nature and so dither fish wouldn't do anything. Other fish may be hiding just because they are timid and in that case if they see dither fish out swimming around they may feel more confident to come out.
