Because they prefer to hang out on the bottom, I think they'd be able to tolerate a fairly shallow tank.
You'll run into other problems like maintaining heat in the tank before you go too shallow for the kuhlis.
However shallow you go, though, make sure that the top of the tank is kuhli-proof. If they feel like exploring, they will do so, and have been known to escape tanks. My tank with kuhlis has a lip that extends a half inch in, and then there's at least four inches from water surface to opening, and I have not lost any kuhlis. I also have a very big tank, so it's unlikely that they're feeling stressed, either. |
