Quick Q for Butterfly and the other Loach experts please

At the weekedn I treated myself to 3 Khulis mainly because I like the look of them and also to try to control a pond snail explosion in one of my tanks.

I put the 3 in the tank and I have never seen 2 of them since, I know they are there because you can see their tracks in the sand come morning.

but the 3rd who has slightly different markings to the other 2 imediately went to sleep under my heater and when he is not sleeping he is flying all over the tank, and not just on the floor but through the plants and up the outside of the pipes etc like a mad thing.

Params are fine 0.0.<5 so its not water problems.

His colouring is fine I just wasn't expecting him(it) to be so active at all times of the day.

PS there are a lot of fry in the tank at the moment could he just be hunting them?

Kuhli loaches are not one of the types of loaches that eat snails, only because they don't have the proper mouth parts, and don't belong to the Botia family, but they do a great job of cleaning out the gravel/sand.

How big are the fry compared to the loaches? If the fry are about 1/4" or bigger, compared to a 3" loach, they should be fine. But if the fry are smaller, or the loach is bigger, the 'ratio' would have to be adjusted too accordingly.

the Mollies are big enough to survive, but the Plattys make a tasty morsel for everything in the tank, why should the loaches miss out o.o

Well it a good job I like them then if the snails are going to be a continuing problem, it seems like they are destined to stay as kuhlis are the only loaches I have space for.

Mind you if you know of a similar sized loach that does have the right mouth parts I am sure I could make space for a few of them as well.

I would have to move a few bottom dwellers out into a different tank but that would not be a hardship the Pandas could go into one of the smaller tanks

The enabler has arrived
My kuhlis are maniacs on some days and on some days it's just a couple of them not always the same ones either. They get at the end of the tank and go around in circles almost against the glass and then just shoot off down the tank. That's one of the reasons I love them they are totally insane
have you seen this terrible youtube of some of my Kuhlis ?

Now for the enabling part Here's you a small loach that will eat snails.
Dwarf chain Loaches. They are the cutest little loaches you've ever seen.

i am sure there is some nice new person here who still only has 1 tank and has not yet succumbed to even early stage MTS, who has not been convinced that perhaps they really should try enhancing their lives with a Loach or a Parrot or a Puff or a betta who have not yet been introduced to mbuna or who believe that SA and Malawi cichlids can live in the same tank!

There is hope for them yet, its fading but still.........................

hmm sombody here may not be impressed but Puffs dont do a lot for me so I wont be enhancing my life experience with those. Now Mbuna are looking more and more interesting, Just need to convince the wife we need to rearrange the lounge furniture and I KNOW I could fit at least another 30 gal in here so that is an option
