I just lost one of my kuhlis. The nitrates had climbed quite a bit, and one was acting sluggish, so it wasn't a surprise that I lost it.
What was a surprise was its condition when I found it dead. The skeleton, completely stripped of everything except the head scales (just like the old Tom and Jerry cartoons), was at one end of the tank, and the skin was in the middle. It was like the thing had exploded.
I'm sure what happened is that my gold barb (always an opportunist when it comes to food) started pecking away at it, and the others decided to join in.

Now I've got to make sure I've got the nitrates under control and stable, and then I need to add more kuhlis, because the colony only has two, and they seem much more shy than normal.

Which leads to my question:
Will kuhlis of a different stripe school together?

Actually, I went to Petsmart yesterday, and they had kuhlis that were dead, but were skinned just like you described. They were the only thing in the tank.

Maybe the kuhlis do that, then. They're pretty good scavengers. Well, hopefully that one didn't get killed by a disease, then.

So am I, though it hurts less to lose a single member of a school than it does to lose a solitary fish. The other kuhlis are still alive (I can still coax them out with shrimp, and one of their hiding places is wedged between a crypt leaf and the glass at the front of the aquarium) so I still have part of the entity that is my kuhli school.

yeah i completely agree, it was a lot easier for me to lose my neons a little while back (feels like forever ago, i was really, really new to fishkeeping) than it was to lose my panda corycat icarus (he had been by himself for a while and was my only panda, i had a false julii and peppered with him)

Sorry you lost your Kuhli Since there's not much to them to begin with it doesn't take their tankmates long to enjoy the feast
My striped and black Kuhlis as well as the new DoJos school together Mine especially enjoy shrimp pellets and blood worms.

Cool. I didn't know they'd do okay with dojos. There's a LFS (if you call an hour away "local") that I've been wanting to give some business to, and they've got striped kuhlis (not found at the local PetSmarts) as well as dojos. Maybe I'll get some of each.
