filter + kuhli = dead?

I have a 125g tank which had 12 kuhlis in it.

I have a Fluval FX5 canister filter on this tank which was not working as effectively. So i opened it up to find 3 Kuhlis, They were returned to the tank.

Now 2 weeks later, i keep finding dead kuhlis (only 2 so far in 48hours), lying on the substrate under the filter intake.

I'm not sure if the filter is trying to suck them up and they are getting caught trying to escape from the suction although i have found them alive in the filter. Or is something else is going on?

Water parameters are ammonia, nitrite 0, nitrate <10ppm temperature 78F. They get fed a mix of shrimp pellets and brine shrimp after the lights go off. The other tank mates are all peaceful. They do not show signs of being bloated and are about 3".

Any ideas on why they are dying?

Thanks in advance of help.

Does your intake have a strainer on it? Otherwise how would they get into the filter to start with??

A panty hose being stretched over the intake and rubberbanded in place should prevent Kuhlis from being pulled into the filter.

I would say the dead ones, under the intake tube, probably died and were pulled to that location by the current.

That would make sense, as i have powerheads pointing to that end of the tank.

Thanks, now to work out why they are dying!

Possibly because they were injured by being sucked into the filter....
