You should use sand. Certain gravel can scratch the kuhli's as they burrow into the substrate.

Sand. They like to play around in it and they can get hurt or scratched on the gravel or rock substrate.

I have had them on both and didn't notice any damage but they enjoy the sand more because they sift it through their gills to get all the tiny microscopic yummy critters hiding in the sand.
when you clean sand you just hover the siphon over it to pick up the gunk because it doesn't get down inside of it. Gravel has to be deep cleaned with the siphon. I have both and like them SOO I guess it just depends on what you want.

I heard people talk about problems of the sand being sucked into the filter and causing problems, is this an urban legend? Because I have really been wanting to get sand in my tanks, especially my 30 gallon tank because I just got 4 khuli loaches and 2 gold dojo loaches today.
