Can they tell the difference between boys and girls?

I got 7 kribensis about a month ago. 3 didn't make it but I still have 4 that are swimming happily in my 10G. I've noticed at least one of them is starting to show the pink/purple belly. They are only about 1" right now so they all look like female to me, i.e. no color extended to the tip of the dorsal fin, round tail fin, etc. However, I noticed one was kind of swimming funny. It was sort of swimming side ways with its belly at the same level as its back, as if it's trying to lie down for a nap. Since I can't tell the difference between the genders at this time, I'm wondering if they know who's a boy and who's a girl.

I've read online that they take about 6 months to reach sexual maturity. I got them when they were about 1/2" and now they have doubled in size in 1 month. I don't think it's anywhere near 6 months. Could they be ready to spawn?

Once in a while, I see one being aggressive and chase others away or nip the fins of other Krib's. Not sure if it was just being playful or getting cranky 'cause it was ready to spawn.

I really enjoy these little guys. They are cute and active. I really hope I get at least 1 pair so they can spawn some more cuties for me.

Female are much stubbier looking, get a bit more yellow and have a deep/red purple when in breeding mode, males are plain looking with a bit of color in their fins. They get much bigger and long bodied.
These are my last pair of kribs I had over a year ago: Female right, male left.

I think either I have 4 female or they are just too young to sex. I've read online that they typically can't be sexed till they are at least 1.5". Mine are just about 1". Also, one of them is an albino so all color clues are out the door.

Yeah, I've seen enough pictures online to tell the difference between adult male and female. They are just gorgeous fish, aren't they?! Mine aren't quite there yet but I'm just so anxious to find out!
