Can anyone please sex my Kribs?

Hi all

I have a pair (bought as male and female) of Kribs but am not 100% sure they are male and female as sold.
When very small i posted same thread as this but since they have grown they do look very similar and i would like a second opinion.
I have attached a few photos for you experts to help me out.

Thanks in advance for your help.

If i was to trade one of my males would two females be better to add to tank or just one?

I have 2 pair in a 20 gallon long tank. The females get nice hot pink colored bellies.

I understand they pair off, so more than one female is not necessary. Of course, I am just beginning to sift through the mountains of research on the web too.

I agree. They are both males. You can tell by their dorsal fin. Males come to a trailing point. Females also are alot smaller and have that distinct purple belly. If these are the same age they look about the same size. I would deffinetly say you got hornswagled. Take one of them back and get a female.

You shouldn't have to worry about anything as far as aggressivness. In my case the female is the aggressor. The male will try to mate but the female will be the one running him away. Until she gives in that is. Then they should breed pretty frequently. My pair have a brood about once a month.

Krib update

Hi all.

Thanks for the responses last time round.
I decided to go and get a 2 female Kribs to add to my tank. a lot younger though. One died within two weeks!!
No problems with the others for about 2 months and the two males and female seemed fine together until the last few days when the larger male has started being really aggressive to the other male. It is now to the point where the slightly smaller male has shredded fins and seems to be hassled all the time.
Could this be the more dominant male pairing with the female or is this something else.

Thanks

It is likely the larger, dominate male attempting to pair off with the female. He is probably trying to eliminate his competition.

I would, if at all possible, move the injured male to another tank/container as soon as possible.

I would also watch for signs of real aggression between the dominate male and the female. He may just be a bully, but chances are that he is ready to mate.

Ok thanks chief, it looks as though i may be too late.
The smaller male is still alive but seems to finding difficulty staying level in the water. Head down floating......its tail fin is more or less non-existant!!

Methylene Blue is a good antibiotic.

You can put him in a plastic container, tote, tank, etc, and use an antibiotic. He may recover, but do not get your hopes up. A heater would probably aid his recovery, but it is your judgement call on whether or not to euthanize him or whether you want to try to save him.

Good luck.

A pair per 20gs is good. They get territorial when breeding.
